I was born and raised in the small farming community of Sterling, Colorado. I attended the University of Colorado and received a Bachelor of Science degree in History in 1975. In 1975 my new bride Johanna and I moved to Boise, Idaho to work and gain state residency. We then moved to Moscow and in 1979 I graduated from the University of Idaho School of Law with my law degree. After a spring break trip to Seattle we decided to look to the Pacific Northwest when it came time to settle down.

Since coming to Bellingham in early 1980, Johanna and I have made Bellingham our home. Although it is very different from the place where we grew up, we find its beauty and way of life to be very much to our liking, and we have made this our permanent home.

My daily work is as a Superior Court Judge and Johanna works for Summit Engineering at the ConocoPhillips refinery. But work isn’t our only diversion. I have been interested in mechanical things since a very early age, so for me working on a sports car and building or repairing things in my shop is a great diversion. Nothing is quite as satisfying as using your hands and skills to repair or improve something and having a finished product to see or use again. With the Chuckanut Sports Car Club I have been able to enjoy my sports cars on the road and in competition, even driving to a few wins in autocross competition.

Johanna just loves to garden. After many years of improving our yards and gardens at our Bellingham homes, she completed the Washington State University Extension’s Master Gardener Program. Not only did she enjoy the classes and learning about plants and their environment, she also likes having the opportunity to volunteer at the annual plant sale at Hovander Homestead Park and at the Master Gardener booth at the Bellingham Farmers Market. Her garden is, as any gardener will tell you, a work in progress, which reflects the diverse and ever-changing world of plants.

We feel very fortunate to live here and share this place with all of you.
