How To Crop Images using Photoshop
Overview
Frequently an image you are working with has a lot of extra area that is not necessary. You may want to remove certain areas of your image or "crop out" unwanted areas.

How To Crop an Image

  1. Open the image
  2. Locate the vertical PhotoShop Tool Palette.
  3. Locate and click on the Crop Tool to select it.

  4. Place your mouse arrow on the image in a location where you will begin to draw out the crop selection area.
  5. Press down on the mouse clicker and drag out a selection box that selects the area you want to keep after the crop is done. The area outside of this selection area will be cropped out of the image or deleted.
  6. Look for the little square boxes along the perimeter dashed selection lines. These are "handles." You can fine tune your selection area by moving the handles.
  7. Place your mouse arrow on a handle, hold down on the clicker and move the mouse arrow.
  8. You can move the top or bottom lines up or down.
  9. You can move the left or right side lines to the left or right.
  10. If you "grab" a corner box, you can adjust both width and height at the same time by holding down on the Shift key and dragging out a crop selection area.
  11. After adjusting the crop lines place the mouse cursor anywhere INSIDE the selection area.
  12. Double click quickly to crop the image.
  13. The image will be cropped to the size selected as shown below.
  14. To cancel a crop selection area select Cancel and start over again by dragging out a new crop selection area.

How to set the Crop Tool to crop to a specific pixel width, height & resolution

  1. First click on the Crop tool on the Tool Palette. This will activate the Crop Tool Options Tool Bar at the top of the PhotoShop screen.
  2. Locate the Width field and right click on it. If pixels are NOT selected, select Pixels. If pixels are selected no change is necessary.

  3. Right click on the Height field and if necessary select pixels.
  4. In the Width and Height fields enter the Width and Height values in pixels that you want to crop the image to.
  5. For images destined for the web set the resolution to 72 pixels/inch.
  6. In the example image below, the values are set to a Width of 400 px and a Height of 400 px x resolution 72. This will crop the image to a perfect square that will be 400 x 400 pixels at a resolution of 72 ppi.

  7. Put your cursor on your image and drag out a crop selection area. You will see that the crop area is constrained and will crop whatever crop selection area you select to the width and height settings you made on the Options Tool Bar.
  8. Click on OK to crop the image.
